Representatives of the Committee for law, order and security of St. Petersburg, branch of the National central bureau of Interpol in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region as well as St. Petersburg department of the Russian Red Cross are taking part in the study trip to Olso (Norway) and Riga (Latvia) as the part of Nordic-Baltic-Russian law enforcement agencies cooperation network project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Members of the cooperation network will learn about the Norwegian and Latvian national plans for prevention of trafficking in human beings, current cooperation projects between official institutions and non-governmental organisation, will also visit centres working with victims of trafficking in two countries. Prevention of human trafficking is considered to be one of the challenges of the modern society requiring cross-sector and cross-border cooperative efforts at the international level. The project unites police officers and law enforcement agencies from Nordic countries, Baltic states and North-West Russia and promotes networking to facilitate effective prevention of trafficking in human beings.
Another project study trip took place in September 2009 with visits to Copenhagen (Denmark) and Vilnius (Lithuania) where also anti-trafficking measures were in focus. The project ends with the International conference in St. Petersburg which will be hosted by the Inter-parliamentaryAssembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It is expected that around 50 representatives of governmental officials and law enforcement agencies from Nordic countries and Baltic states will attend the event in St. Petersburg. The main aim is to meet their Russian counterparts to discuss the prevention of trafficking in human beings and propose further cooperation actions which could also include expertise from CIS countries to contribute to Nordic-Baltic-Russian tripartite cooperation.
The project is implemented by the Nordic-Baltic Network of Policewomen (NBNP)
